Gossip Girl Wedding Recap

As I mentioned on Monday, this week's episode of Gossip Girl was the Royal Wedding, and I was extremely excited about it. I sat down on my couch at 7:45, roaring to go, enduring the last, painful minutes of Seinfeld. I had my own party, of sorts, because parties are fun and what else is there to celebrate in Janurary.

The wedding (cup)cake, from Sakara Sweets

So beautiful!
This cupcake was actually rose-flavored. Or rather, the cake was, and the frosting was white chocolate. I'd never had rose-flavored cake, but it sounded good and this cupcake looked so regal, I couldn't resist, and it ended up being delicious. It was sweet and just felt very elegant.  If you're in the Gainesville area, I would highly recommend Sakara Sweets.

The royal dinner (leftovers from Emilanos and salad), served on the finest china
Motivation to finish my work for the day.
My outfit: a salute to Blair Waldorf and royalty everywhere
So what actually happened on the episode? It was magnificent. They actually surprised me a bunch of times. I don't even know where to begin. Let's start by talking about which of my predictions were correct. (Stop reading now if you don't want it to be spoiled)

I predict that the wedding will not happen
Wrong! In what was perhaps the biggest surprise of the wedding episode, Blair Waldorf actually got married. It was crazy! And then, in an even bigger twist, it turned out that Prince Louis had only married her to save face, and to him their marriage was "just a show." "And you're going to put on the best damn show ever," he threatened Blair. And then she ran away...

I predict that Chuck, Georgina and the evil priest will all make attempts to stop the wedding, but ultimately, Blair will be the one who ends it.
Hm...three out of four predictions were correct. Georgina and the evil priest did try to stop the wedding, but Chuck didn't! He pretended to go along with the evil priest's sabotage plan, but then he turned around and sabotaged his sabotage plan by poisoning him with Mexican water. Classic! I actually really did like that twist. First, it showed that Chuck has grown up and that he really wants her to be happy. However, I was pretty mad when he didn't interrupt when the priest said "speak now." Anyway, Georgina, of course, did try to sabotage, but was mostly unsuccessful.  As for Blair, the wedding wasn't stopped, so technically that was wrong on all counts. BUT she did run out of the reception, and away from her groom, so that skill kind of counts I think.

I predict Georgina will set something on fire
Not literally, no, but she did run around stirring up trouble, telling Serena that Dan in clearly in love with Blair, oh, and then there was the big reveal at the end (more on that in a minute). So clearly her action set the UES on fire.

I predict Chuck will give some kind of speech, or that some small object will remind Blair of some moment in their past, and it will make her waver. Or both.
Hm...no on the small object, but Chuck did make a speech, just not in front of everyone like I was expecting. In yet ANOTHER shocking turn of events, Blair's mother convinced Chuck to come talk to Blair before the wedding, and he came and told her he was in love with her, and that "it should be them up there." Awww. But alas, Blair said she loved him too but can't be with him for reasons she can't tell him. But then Serena, who always has to meddle, told Chuck about Blair's pact with God.

I predict that a Gossip Girl blast will interrupt the ceremony
YES!!!! Totally called this one!! Gossip Girl sent out a video of Blair telling Chuck she loved him, and everyone's phones vibrated, and they all checked them right there, because clearly they can't wait till the end of the wedding. And Blair was embarrassed but she asked Louis to forgive her and keep going and they DID! What!?!

I predict that the reception will still happen, even if the wedding doesn't.
Yep...although nothing particularly noteworthy happened, except for the aforementioned confession from Louis, that the whole marriage was a sham. And that Blair ran away.

I predict that Chuck's dog Monkey will play some part in his wedding-stopping attempt
Nope. I keep wondering if Monkey is going to be a plot point but I guess the writers really just brought him on to increase Chuck's likability/show that he's a "changed man."

I predict that there will be some minor thing that will go wrong, like the flowers or cake, causing Blair to freak out, but that it will be resolved just in time.
Nope, everything was perfect. Except that Blair didn't appear to have a hairdresser and I'm sorry, but her hair looked truly horrendous. Why didn't they put it up!? Her long, wavy extensions covered up the beauty of the dress.

I predict that at the last minute, Nate will invite real Cousin Charlie to some part of the wedding, and it will be revealed that she is in fact, the real Cousin Charlie
Well, real Cousin Charlie was a waitress at the wedding, so Nate didn't invite her, but Nate is definitely interested in her.

I predict fake Cousin Charlie will also make an appearance
Nope! No fake Cousin Charlie. I just know she's coming back sometime. It's like a ticking time bomb. I just wonder when the writers are going to let it explode.

Other good moments:
When Chuck very significantly said "Water?" to the evil priest in the first scene, I knew something was up. Otherwise, why else would they include that five seconds of dialogue? And I was right! Excellent use of Chekhovian theory, GG writers.

I liked the Serena dream sequence, but it wasn't a surprise. Back in December, a video leaked that appeared to be from Chase Crawford's phone. It was him watching the playback of the dream sequence, along with Blake Lively. I saw it on this site. You should watch it because the actors have some funny commentary.

I was extremely surprised that Blair ran away with Dan in the end, and not Chuck. And even though I prefer Chuck and Blair together, I think her running away with Dan makes sense, if only for story-telling reasons. The writers can't put Chuck and Blair together right away, otherwise the story would be over. Also, Dan and Blair are pretty funny together, and it makes for an interesting story, especially when you factor in the fact that Serena still loves Dan, an the fact that Blair only sees Dan as a friend. Say what you will about Gossip Girl, but their writers definitely know how to tell a good story.

There was this great moment between Dan and Louis, but I only got it on my second viewing of the episode. (Yes, I watched it twice. So sue me.) See, Louis believes that Dan and Serena are dating for real, even though they're just pretending to. He comes over to Dan and says something like "Blair told me all about your feelings," and at first, it appears that Dan thinks Louis is talking about his feelings for Blair. But then Louis says something about Serena, and Dan gets it. But still, it was pretty funny. But almost too subtle. I mean, I only noticed it the second time around.

Other subtle things: Gossip Girl, in the opening monologue, says that you better "pray" she doesn't write about you. This foreshadows all the stuff with the evil priest and Georgina dressing up as an alter boy. Also, Dan says to Serena, talking about dancing at the wedding, "Once I  get my dress shoes on, I'll probably stomp all over you." And at the wedding reception, he stomps all over her heart, when she tells him she loves him and he doesn't say it back! And then runs away with Blair!

Oh, and what about the big reveal that Georgina is Gossip Girl? Well, at first I was like, oh that totally makes sense. She is diabolical and has lots of free time. But actually, I don't think she's been Gossip Girl all along. I think she's done something to the old Gossip Girl (kidnapped her? Hacked into the site?). Anyway, I hope she's not it, because I was hoping they'd save that surprise for the very end of the show.

And  some of my favorite lines:
"Jesus owes me one" - Georgina
"Oh look, it's the princess bride" - Blair's dad, Cyrus, who is played by Wallace Shawn, who was in the movie The Princess Bride
"If I ever cried, I'd be moved to tears" -Georgina, after she overhears Chuck's speech to Blair
"You know the world is really a mess when the most honest person we know is Chuck Bass." -Nate

And finally, the fashion

I have to say, I was a little disappointed by Blair's wedding dress. The bottom of it is beautiful, but I think the bow looks weird and child-ish and needs to be taken off. And her hair!! Why?! Why!?

A lot of people online were making fun of the short bridesmaids dresses, but I actually like them. I mean, they wouldn't work on a lot of people, but they work on these thin, young girls, and it makes sense for Blair's wedding, sense they look like little peonies.

And I thought Serena looked the best of everyone (including Blair). That dress was so beautiful! All the layers! And her hair looked good.

Oh, and one last note: I loved this dramatic song, which played while Blair walked down the aisle. Definitely fit for a girl walking to her doom. (Maybe that's why they made her hair look so bad? To make her look doomed?)

PS. If you're a fan of the show, you should really read these recaps from NY Magazine, because they are hilarious.
